My unit was listed on Airbnb while I was living in it. I found out when a stranger knocked on my door.
My roommate traveled for work regularly. Or so I believed. She'd be gone Tuesday through Sunday most weeks. I never thought much of it because she was quiet, paid on time, and we'd talked about her job requiring a lot of travel when we moved in.
The man at my door Friday night was confused and apologetic. He'd paid $180 on Airbnb for the weekend and had a confirmation. He showed me his phone. The listing was my unit. My couch in the photos. I could see my coffee table, my bookshelf in the background of one of the kitchen shots. The host account name was a variant of my roommate's name.
She had been listing the room on Airbnb when she was "traveling." She was not traveling. She was staying somewhere else and charging strangers $160-200 a night to sleep in her room in an apartment she was paying $850/month for. If she averaged two weekends a month, she was clearing $300-400/month profit after her rent share.
Our lease explicitly prohibits subletting without written permission. If management had found out, we would both have been named in the eviction filing because we were both on the lease.
I confronted her. Her position was that her room was her space to use as she chose, that she wasn't subletting the whole apartment, and that she'd been "careful." She did not apologize. She moved out three weeks later. I notified management and asked to be removed from the lease. They required a new application process. I moved out instead.
