My building's 'smart home system' has been down for 47 days. The app still charges $18/month.

The smart home app controls the thermostat, door lock, and package notifications. It stopped working April 3rd. Maintenance says it's 'a system issue being resolved.' The $18 technology fee on my rent bill remains unchanged and was charged again May 1st.

The technology fee is the one that really gets me. It's not for a specific service. It's for 'access to building technology.' That phrasing is specifically designed to survive the technology not working.

My building's app has been 'experiencing intermittent issues' since January. It's May. Intermittent is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Update day 52: the app still doesn't work. I received an email from the tech vendor apologizing for 'disruption to our service quality.' I used a key to open my door like a person from the past. The $18 was charged again.
